Free things to do with kids in major European capitals

I stood at the edge of the Parisian metro, map in hand, as my kids gazed up at the labyrinthine signs, their faces a mix of excitement and trepidation. We were on a mission to explore the free wonders of Europe’s major capitals, starting with the City of Light.

Unraveling the Mystery of Free Museums

A local tipped us off about the Paris Musées initiative, offering free entry to over 14 museums on the first Sunday of each month. We dashed to the Musée d’Orsay, weaving past street performers and artists, the smell of fresh croissants wafting from a nearby café.

A Dance with Local Customs

At the museum, a kindly docent engaged my children in a lively discussion about Monet’s water lilies. As we left, the sounds of a spontaneous street dance party drew us in – a collision of cultures, with hip-hop meets French folk, under the Eiffel Tower’s watchful eye.

As night fell, we strolled along the Seine, the city’s neon glow reflected in the water. My kids, tired but exhilarated, turned to me with a realization: that sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don’t plan for.
