I stood frozen in front of my open suitcase, the chaos of my belongings spilling out like a confessional. How to pack a suitcase using the KonMari method was my mission, but the reality was overwhelming.
The Chaos of Packing
The task seemed daunting, but I recalled Marie Kondo’s words: ‘the space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.’ I took a deep breath and began.
The KonMari Method
Hold each item, and if it sparks joy, you keep it. If not, you thank the item for its service and let it go. I started with clothes, the easiest category, or so I thought. But as I held each piece, memories flooded back, making the decision harder.
- Step 1: Gather – Collect all items of a category.
- Step 2: Hold – Hold each item to see if it sparks joy.
- Step 3: Decide – Decide what to keep and what to discard based on joy.
As I packed, the suitcase began to fill not just with clothes, but with the essence of my journey: a scarf from a market in India, a book from a New York bookstore. Each item told a story, sparking joy and a sense of purpose.
The Realization
Packing with the KonMari method wasn’t just about fitting everything into a suitcase; it was about curating a journey that reflected who I was becoming. It was a process of self-discovery, of embracing the essence of travel and personal growth.
As the suitcase closed, a sense of accomplishment and peace settled over me. The method had taught me to cherish not just the items I packed, but the memories and lessons they represented.
